Sticky Keys keeps popping up? Here’s how to stop it

Short answer

Pressing Shift five times in a row turns Sticky Keys on, and the box appears. Press Shift five times again to turn it off. To stop the box for good, turn off Keyboard shortcut for Sticky keys in Settings.

How do I turn Sticky Keys off, and stop the box?

Press Shift five times, then check Sticky keys in Settings › Accessibility › Keyboard and turn off its keyboard shortcut.

Use this when a box about Sticky Keys appears, or keys like Shift and Ctrl seem to stay “stuck” on.

  1. Sticky Keys turns on when Shift is pressed five times in a row. Press Shift five times again to turn it off.

  2. To check: press Windows+U, select Keyboard, and make sure Sticky keys is off.

  3. To stop the box appearing: open the Sticky keys settings on the same page and turn off Keyboard shortcut for Sticky keys.

Done when

Keys behave normally and the box no longer appears.
