Why is my computer talking, or zoomed in?

Short answer

A voice reading everything out is Narrator: press Windows+Ctrl+Enter to turn it off. A magnified screen that follows the mouse is Magnifier: press Windows+Esc.

Both usually come on through a key shortcut pressed by accident. The steps below also show how to stop that.

Why did my computer start talking?

That’s Narrator. Press Windows+Ctrl+Enter to turn it off.

Use this when a voice reads out everything on the screen and you didn’t ask it to.

  1. Press Windows+Ctrl+Enter. That turns Narrator off.

  2. To stop it starting by accident: press Windows+Ctrl+N to open Narrator settings, and turn off Keyboard shortcut for Narrator.

  3. If it starts every time you sign in, turn off Start Narrator after sign-in on the same page.

Done when

The voice stops.

Good to know

On a touch-screen tablet, pressing the Windows button and Volume up together can also switch Narrator on and off.

  2. While it’s on, press Windows++ to zoom in more, and Windows+- to zoom out.

  3. Turn it off: press Windows+Esc.
